Cell Phones & Electronic Devices (including ear buds)
Due to potential loss of learning from interruptions of electronic devices, cell phones and electronic devices can be used on school property, but they must be turned off from 7:55 a.m. – 3:55 p.m. Electronic devices and phones must be turned off and not seen unless they are being used as part of an academic class. The expectation is that all students check in their phones to the teacher, who will lock and secure them, at the beginning of each and every class and return them at the end of class. This will take place for all classes including Specials, STEAM, and lunch/recess. If a student is found texting or using their phones or electronic devices, including earbuds, in any manner, it will be taken away and we will follow the protocol below.
Phone/Earbud Protocol:
Riverside Middle School has a no phone/earbuds protocol. If you need your device for emergency reasons, tell your guardian to contact the office to have your needs met.
The first time your phone/earbuds are seen in use, you will be given a verbal warning, and your phone will be put in the classroom lock box.
First Offense: The second time your phone/earbuds are seen in use they will be taken to the office and held for the remainder of the day. The student can pick up their phone/earbuds at the end of the day. The office will give another verbal warning, and your offense will be documented with them.
Second Offense: The third time your phone/earbuds are seen in use, they will be taken to the office and held for the remainder of the day. The student can pick up their phone/earbuds at the end of the day. You will receive your final verbal warning, and your offense will be documented with them again.
Third Offense: Your phone/earbuds will be given to the office and administration will contact your parents/guardians, who will need to pick up your phone/earbuds. Your phone will be checked in and out of the office daily for one week.
Any further offenses will result in your phone being removed and kept in the office for a duration determined by the administration.
The Riverside Middle School office is open during the school day to receive and communicate messages to kids. If there is an urgent concern we are quickly able to locate children and put them in touch with parents. Students can use their cell phones after school to communicate directly with parents.
